Teacher kicks 9-year-old student in the back
White teacher assaults 9-year-old Black child
Brewton, Alabama – January 22,2019- The child’s mother received a phone call from the school principal, to inform her about (1) a teacher that kicked her daughter in the back, earlier that morning and, (2) would like for her to come to the school to view the school’s tape.
So, what happens, when the bully is the teacher?
The reasons for being bullied reported most often by students include physical appearance, race/ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, and sexual orientation (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2016).
“Our nation’s schools should be safe havens for teaching and learning, free of crime and violence. Any instance of crime or violence at school not only affects the individuals involved, but also may disrupt the educational process and affect bystanders, the school itself, and the surrounding community” (Brookmeyer, Fanti, and Henrich 2006; Goldstein, Young, & Boyd, 2008).
Bullying occurs a great deal amongst children in just about any setting.
Some parents can attest to receiving phone calls during school hours because his or her child often needs a pep talk on how to deal with a bully. According to StopBullying.gov., when adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior they send the message that it is not acceptable.
